My Story
(and I'm sticking to it)
Being raised in a musical family that traveled the world I became a fan and performer of music from an early age. The guitar was about the only instrument that my parents did not play, so naturally and with more than a little help from The Beatles, I gravitated toward it. That also practically guaranteed me a slot in the family band. So from the start, I've always encouraged kids, both young and old, to join in.

By the time I finally planted roots in Orlando, I had lived and performed in Texas, Alaska, Labrador (Canada), Michigan, South Korea, Japan, Colorado, England, Germany, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Crete, Greece, California, and throughout Florida, including the Miracle Strip. Shortly after my arrival in Orlando, I began a long-running stint with The Frap Band,

a well-established ensemble known for its accomplished musicianship and whacky antics that included drinking from the jar of knowledge, ballroom chair dancing, and virtuosic solos on a kazoo inserted into a rubber chicken.

I received a Jammy award in 1990 for Best Classic Rock vocalist by a local music publication. While The Frap Band seldom performs anymore these days, we were called back into service to perform at a wedding reception in Key West in December of 2008.

The 3 Amigos

After years of performing solely in bands, my solo career was launched on the patio at The Olde House (formerly the Chili Bordello) in College Park circa 1998 and was originally billed as “Fred Frap and Friends” so I wouldn’t feel so lonely. Over time I became “Fred Frap and his Imaginary Friends”, a name that I’ve grown into and played with ever since.

I continue to perform about 150 shows per year including out of state gigs. More recently I’ve incorporated digital looping and harmonizing technologies into my performances that further suggest the idea of imaginary friends at play. I do not use drum machines or pre-packaged background tracks. All music and other sounds are created and generated during each performance, on the fly, and in real time. All music links on my website are direct recordings of live performances.
